Caesar Abi Shdid is a Senior Instructor, a Graduate and DAS faculty at the College of Engineering and Computing. He joined the FIU faculty in January 2006 where he was the Undergraduate Advisor and a member of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research centers on how to apply artificial intelligence algorithms to thermal modeling of buildings and to condition assessment of structures.
Educational background.
Abi Shdid graduated from the Lebanese American University (State University of New York) in 1999 with a B.E. in Civil Engineering. In 2001, he earned a M.S. in Building Construction from the University of Florida. In 2004, he earned a Ph.D. in Building Construction with a minor in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida. In 2005, he earned a second M.S. in Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering specialization from the University of Florida.
Work Experience
During his senior year at the Lebanese American University, and after graduating with his B.E., Caesar Abi Shdid worked as a Site Engineer with the Institute of Geotechnics and Materials. After graduating from the University of Florida, he joined the faculty of Georgia Southern University as an Assistant Professor of Construction Management. In January 2006, he joined the faculty of Florida International University as an Instructor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. There, Caesar Abi Shdid served as an Undergraduate Advisor and Director of Technology Transfer and Training. In July 2009, he was appointed as Director of External Programs for the College of Engineering and Computing, where he manages all professional and continuing education programs for the College, as well as all Distance Learning programs.
Teaching
Caesar Abi Shdid’s teaching at FIU reflects his multiple areas of expertise. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses on heavy construction, construction project management, project planning, structural design, structural analysis, structural mechanics, and computer applications for engineers and managers. He has also led classes on sustainable building engineering, research methods in civil engineering, as well as multiple seminars on various topics related to the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Professional Engineering (PE) licensing exams.
Publications/Funding/Licenses/Professional Associations
In addition to several journal and conference papers, Caesar Abi Shdid has authored three course-specific textbooks that were published by Pearson Publishing Inc. During his appointment at FIU, he has been able to secure—in collaboration with other faculty members—more than half of a million dollars of external research funding. Abi Shdid has served as a consultant and technical advisor for two corporations. He is a licensed professional engineer and a member of multiple professional societies.
