FIU – Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering FE Exam Readiness Evaluation Procedure

The Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE) requires every student applicant to obtain a certification from their school to show their “Good Standing”. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering feels that it bears the responsibility of assuring good academic standing of its undergraduate students through a readiness evaluation procedure, as follows:

1. The student must have completed all the prerequisite courses listed on the "FE Exam Readiness Evaluation matrix" with a minimum grade of C.

2. The student can take a 3-hour assessment exam. This exam will be a multiple-choice exam similar to the actual FE exam and will be used to evaluate the student’s deficiencies in particular areas of the FE exam.

a. If the student passes the assessment exam with a minimum grade of 60%, the student is given a “good standing” evaluation on their FE exam application and the student does not have to take CGN 4980.

b. If a student fails the assessment exam (grade < 50%), the deficiency areas are pointed out, and the student is expected to register for and pass CGN 4980, as outline below, before applying for the FE Exam.

c. If the student scores a grade between 50% and 60% on the assessment exam, the student is given a “good standing” evaluation on their FE exam application, but the student has to take CGN 4980 during the same semester as the FE Exam.

3. If the student does not take the evaluation exam, or takes the evaluation exam and fails, the student must then take and pass CGN 4980 “CE Seminar” class.

a. CGN 4980 syllabus will show that 100% of the course grade is based on exams: 60% Final Exam and 40% on section exams.

b. No grade will be given to attendance, but attendance will be required.

c. To pass CGN 4980, a student has to attend each and every class session and take all exams.

d. Undergraduate students will not be allowed to register CGN 6930 FEEDS section of the seminar.
