CEE family grows once again, hires 2 new faculty members in wind and structures!

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has hired two new faculty members. This marks the third year in a row that the department has expanded by as many to now an all-time high level of 18. The growth in the size of the department comes as a result of its steady growth of student body as well as its external research funding.

The two new hires are in the areas of wind engineering and structural materials. The position in wind engineering is a joint appointment with the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) at FIU. Both will join in August 2006.

Arindam Gan Chowdhury received his PhD from Iowa State University in May 2004, where he participated in the design and instrumentation of ISU wind tunnel, and performed laboratory simulation of tornado and microb-urst and their interaction with structures. His MS degree is from the Indian Institute of Technology, where he focused on ductility of bridge piers. Currently, he works as Project Director at the Ft. Lauderdale office of Thornton Tomasetti, where he designs structures subjected to high velocity hurricane zone wind loads.

Nakin Suksawang received his PhD from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, in January 2006. His BS and MS degrees are also from Rutgers. His doctoral work focused on the development of live load distribu-tion factors for girder bridges, while his masters thesis was related to the effect of pozzolans and curing methods on the durability of concrete. Nakin is currently a post-doctoral fellow at Rutgers.
