Wind Engineering Expert, Dr. Emil Simiu, joins IHRC/CEE

CEE is delighted to announce that Dr. Emil Simiu, the World renowned wind engineering expert and the co-author of several books on wind engineering, including Design of Buildings and Bridges for Wind (Wiley, 2006) and Wind Effects on Structures (3rd Ed., Wiley, 1996), has joined the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at FIU as a Distinguished Research Professor. Dr. Simiu, also a fellow of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has worked extensively on the estimation of wind and wave effects on buildings and bridges. He has developed the database-assisted design concept and has pioneered its systematic use for structures subjected to wind loads, an essential step toward the development of performance-based standards. He was the 1984 recipient of the Federal Engineer of the Year award from the National Society of Professional Engineers, the inaugural recipient of ASCE's Robert H. Scanlan Medal (2003), and the recipient of five U.S. Department of Commerce Medals, including two Gold Medals. At FIU, Dr. Simiu, will be leading the Wall of Wind full-scale testing research project team to assess hurricane-structure interaction and to develop mitigation tools to enhance the hurricane resiliency of our built environment.
