Message from the Acting Chair Fang Zhao, Ph.D.

Greetings!

It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the web site of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Florida International University. Almost every one of the department’s core disciplines touch upon an important facet of our lives, and that is exactly why we the civil and environmental engineers continue to provide much needed service to the society.

Our department was first established in 1974, and has gone through an exponential growth over the last 30 years. Although a young department, owing to our dedicated faculty, traditions of excellence and innovations have been intertwined with our culture of diversity. Our department has been the house to many world-renowned faculty including Professor Lambert Tall, Professor Oktay Ural, and Professor Emeritus LeRoy Thompson. We currently have 18 full-time faculty members and a number of highly qualified affiliated and adjunct faculty and research associates.

Our department currently offers bachelors of science in civil engineering and environmental engineering, masters of science in civil engineering, environmental engineering and in environmental and urban systems, and doctoral degrees in civil engineering. Our undergraduate enrollment stands at about 300. We also have about 120 graduate students, which includes over 55 doctoral students.

Our department proudly houses the nationally recognized Lehman Center for Transportation Research, named in the honor of Congressman Bill Lehman and his tireless efforts to make South Florida a better place. Our faculty also has close collaborations and joint appointments with the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) and the Applied Research Center (ARC). This last year, we received over $3 million dollars of new research awards in the areas of construction, geotechnical, environmental, structures, transportation, and wind engineering from local, state, and federal funding agencies.
